"Why are the girls sports teams called the 'Lady Warriors?' And the boy's just the 'Warriors?'" - Lillian Modeer

Our school mascot is the West Warrior. This is what the male sports players are called. Why, then, are the female sports players called the “Lady Warriors?” We wanted to know, and after interviewing Mr. Hutcherson, we know why. You probably know that Mr. Hutcherson coaches the A-squad basketball team. When he came to West he called the girls the West Warriors. Then, someone interrupted him, saying, “No, we’re not the Warriors, we’re the Lady Warriors!” The rest is history.

We then interviewed parents, female sports players, and random students, asking them if they were aware of this and what they thought of this. A girls’ basketball player and a girls’ volleyball both felt that this was “girl power”, that it made them sound strong, and felt it was good to separate the girls’ and the boys’ names. Other people thought that it was segregation against the genders. One person we interviewed, Annabelle Brown, shared with us that that this was at her brother’s school, and that she didn’t think it was right. The parents we interviewed shared that this was at their colleges too, and that we should probably change it.

What do you think? Tell us in the comments. Should it be “Lady Warriors” or not?
